Nikon Lens Serial Numbers
It turns out there is a special code Nikon uses to mark equipment they have factory refurbished. Nikon refurbished products (lenses, cameras, flashes) have the serial number punched with two circular indentations (pin pricks) on either side of the serial number.
For example, if the serial reads “.123456789.” with pin prick marks, it’s refurbished. If it reads “123456789”, with no pin prick marks, then it’s new.
As a side note, factory refurbished is often just as good as new, in both appearance and performance. Every refurbished product is fully inspected and tested. Buying factory refurbished is a great way to get more bang for your photography buck.
