First let me start off by making it clear that most of the flying I do in X-plane 10 is in the Flight Factor 767 between FL300 and FL390. After reading all the reviews, watching many vlogs, and seeing the wonderful pictures posted on this subreddit, I was finally convinced to purchase skymaxx pro v3. I was excited to finally have convincing overcast layers, wonderful cirrus clouds, and a better high altitude experience, all with higher frame rates as advertised on the x-aviation website. That is what I spent 40 no-refundable dollars on, but unfortunately, I do not feel like that is not what I got.

The better frame-rate did not happen, in fact, it got slightly worse. My computer is no slouch with an i5-4690k, 16 GB of ram, and a GTX 970, way more that the recommended specs. However, setting the cloud coverage area to anything past a 5000km^2, which is not convincing at all above 15,000ft, resulted in a choppy experience of <30 fps. The result of having a cloud coverage of 5000 km² above 20,000 ft, is a well defined box of clouds below the aircraft, not very convincing at all.

The overcast layer boasted about on the website was way too good to be true. In reality it consisted of a thin layer of texture at whatever altitude the nearest METAR reported overcast. While it did extend much farther than the cumulus clouds, there were times where where I could make out sharp corners to the layer, which did not have me convinced that it extended to the horizon at all. The manner in which the overcast layer would appear and disappear in a instant while flying along switching from METAR to METAR, really took away from the whole experience. One minute it there would be an overcast layer beneath me, the next there would be nothing. The only way, it seems, to remedy this is to pay another $20 for the Real Weather Connector (RWC), and I don't see the point to this unless you have a supercomputer and are able to max out the cloud draw distance to be able to see the independent weather systems generated by RWC. At the very least the overcast layer could gradually fade away or appear slowly like the other clouds generated by Skymaxx.

Now lets talk about the other clouds in skymaxx. while they may result in some awesome still photos that can be seen all over this subreddit, They are much less convincing to fly through in the simulator. While flying through the clouds you can make out distinct layers in them, as if they were generated by many flat layers compacted into a cloud shape. This results in a choppy effect as each layer disappears as you progress through the onion of a cloud. It is not convincing at all; especially compared to the default x-plane clouds which are made up of particles and interact with the aircraft in a way that looks somewhat convincing.

Lastly, and this may be a simple fix by the developers, is the cirrus cloud layer. It appears as an infinitely thin layer, much like overcast layer, which is stationary with respect the the aircraft. As you fly along just above or below these clouds, it becomes apparent that they are flying along with the airplane. The texturelayer which makes up the clouds is not fixed to the ground, or even more realistically the air, but to the airplane. As a result I ended up flying from the East coast of the United States to the west coast, alongside the exact same cirrus cloud, that does not make for a convincing simulation. This is either an oversight by the developers or proof that skymaxx is not meant to be used when flying in the flight levels.

Overall I was highly disappointed with Skymaxx pro v3 and uninstalled it after 20 hours. While skymaxx has a superior lighting and sky colors, the clouds themselves are not impressive. Maybe skymaxx was intended for VFR flight conditions unlike what I was lead to believe. If anyone has any news of upcoming updates that are going to fix some of the problems I described, or have other suggestions for me, please let me know. I would love to give Skymaxx another shot, if it could be made more realistic for flying, otherwise I will just stick to the default clouds. I would like to thank anyone who read this whole thing as well as anyone who can give me any pointers.

TLDR: I did not find Skymaxx pro to be any more convincing that the default clouds, and performance did not increase as promised under any of the skymaxx settings. Perhaps a little buyers remorse or perhaps it is overrated.
